Policeman, two others on trial for allegedly stealing motorbike

Begoro (E/R), Feb. 11, GNA - The Begoro District Court has granted bail to an interdicted policeman and two alleged accomplices for abetting to steal and stealing a Yamaha motorbike belonging to the Ministry of Health at Begoro.

The accused were Charles Mensah, 40, an interdicted policeman from Dawurampong Police Post in the Central Region and his accomplices, Samuel Dogbe 26, an Accra trader and Isaac Teye, 21, a driver at Begoro. A fourth suspect, George, is on the run.

The three suspects pleaded not guilty to the charge and are on a five-million-cedi bail each with two sureties to re-appear on February 24.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector William Nkrumah, told the court presided over by Mr Paul Affum that on December 24 last year, Mensah telephoned Dogbe and George to come down to Begoro for the deal. He said Mensah accommodated the two persons in the house of Teye with some dangerous gadgets purposely used for cutting wire gauge and iron bars being used in armed robbery.

The prosecution said the loss of the motorbike was reported to the Begoro police on December 25 and later the Nsawam police intercepted Dogbe and George who were ridding it to Accra. George, however, escaped arrest, the Court heard.

Inspector Nkrumah said Dogbe admitted stealing the motorbike from Begoro during police interrogation.

He said Teye went into hiding on hearing that his friends had been arrested, until he was apprehended on January 9, this year. Meanwhile, Mensah had been re-arrested and placed in police custody for allegedly involving in a robbery at Dawurampong.
