Want to express your romantic side through colours? Try the candy neutral colours known as pastels. They are soothing, soft and often described as ‘washed out’. They come in different hues that can give your style an innocent and romantic vibe.

Since pastels lack strong chromatic content, be careful while matching them. Going overboard with pastels can turn your style into an uninspiring ensemble.

Incorporating pastels into an overall style can be tricky, but with little care, you should be able to pull it off.

Style basics…

- Avoid matching more than two pieces in a soft colour scheme at a time.

- Do not be afraid to mix pastel colours with neutrals. For example, try beige and coffee shades for balance.

- If you must colour-block pastel, match fabrics with clean straight lines. Pastel colour-block will not work with clothes that have too many patterns.

- If you are dark skinned, wear lighter, creamier shades of pastels but if you are a little bit on the light side, go for coffee tones and richer shades.

- Afraid of taking the whole nine yards? Start with small things here and there. Use accessories such as a pastel clutch, jewellery, hats or shoes until you get accustomed to the style.

- Accessories in pastel shades can also be used separately with full black attire. For example, a mint clutch or a pastel necklace worn over a black dress will create a magnificent look.
