Prez Mahama to open Ghana Music Week celebration Monday

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to open the first ever Ghana Music Week (GMW) being organized by Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) on Monday March 4.

It would be supported by the Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Ministry headed by Mrs. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare.

The event would take place at the National Theatre on the theme: “Engaging music as a catalyst for unity and national growth”.

A Tourism Officer at the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mr. Alphonse Kumaza, indicated that the celebration is aimed at creating the biggest platform to harmonize activities of artistes, bring stakeholders together to support the course of Ghanaian music and showcase the values of Ghanaian authentic music and tourism.

Regional music and dance festivals will also be organised across the ten regions.

Activities lined up for the celebration include Traditional Music Day on March 4th and the official opening by President Mahama.

Day 2 - choral music, instrumentals and live band day with spot light on stakeholders in the advertising, arts, crafts, designs, film, performing arts, publishing, research and development and software and media.

Music industry training workshops and national music essay contest will also take place on day two.

Day 3 - hip life and reggae day comprising a discussion on the growing industry will be held followed by a mega event dubbed the “Ghana unity concert” at the Accra sports stadium from 12:00 noon to 12:00 mid-night.

Day 4 - Jazz and authentic African music for music lovers.

A Gala nite would be organised for expatriates at the National Theatre alongside film show and drama in partnership with the British council.

Day 5 - Hip-life music day with live radio presentations with a Highlife alive concert in the evening.

Day 6 - Africa Music Day on that day a clean-up exercise will be held to enable Musiga to give back to society.

There will also be a concert dubbed MUSIGA all – star & awards night.

Day 7 - Gospel Music Day organised by the inter-churches mass choir show and Ghana music week gospel rock show.

The week’s activities are expected to attract over 500 musicians, bands, industry experts from around the world and representatives of music unions from Africa and United Kingdom.
