Former President Rawlings at the weekend accused the Nigerian Head of State, President Olusegun Obasanjo, of setting spies on him.

Addressing a National Democratic Congress (NDC) rally at Tamale, he said that the spies sent from Nigeria were housed behind his residence, but did not explain why the Nigerian leader would want to send some persons to spy on him.

Confirming this on a Tema-based radio station recently, his Special Aide, Victor Smith, said the Nigerian President wanted Mr Rawlings dead.

Mr Smith said the Nigerian leader in collaboration with President Thabo Mbeki had entered into an alliance with President Kufuor to send what he described as ?mercenaries?, but not spies, as his mentor claimed to crush the former President.

According to Victor Smith, the mercenaries will be deployed to selected polling stations.

The former President, the paper has learnt, attacked the two African leaders for their apparent refusal to act on his recent letters to them accusing the NPP administration of manipulating the electoral process with a view to rigging the polls.
