A spirit possessed a woman was detained at the Aflao Police station for attempting to forcibly eject a tenant from her father's house. Ama Ahiatsi, 27, a "Koko" seller at Aflao, who was detained behind the counter, at the station, became possessed, went into a frenzy, sang and murmured in several languages halting activities at the station for more than two hours.
A large crowd trooped to the station to catch a glimpse of Ahiatsi.
At first the Police thought she was putting it on to gain her freedom so they ignored her, but when the possession continued for about two hours they allowed two male followers of the spirit to perform some rituals to bring her back into sobriety. They doused her face, arms and feet with water and a whitish substance in a calabash to restore her to normalcy.
Ahiatsi who told the Ghana News Agency that she inherited the spirit from her father said, "I did not know anything happened, but if anything it was the rejection of the filth at the station. My god is a clean god and abhors dirt."
Before Ahiatsi's statement could be taken and bail granted, Christopher Tenge, her husband, stormed into the station and demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the wife and quickly dashed out. He was, however, arrested when he showed up again and attempted to release her.
When he was searched, a pod of "Ataku", the seeds which are used to invoke the spirits, was found on him.
A Police source told the Ghana News Agency that Ahiatsi was arrested for harassing Mr Paul Kofi, a tenant in her late father's two-room compound house at Aflao rented to him by her stepmother. Ahiatsi lives in a different house with her husband.
The source said Ahiatsi recently broke in and took occupancy of her stepmother's room while she was away in Lome and also decided to eject Mr Kofi, the complainant.
