Ghanaian rapper Medikal has urged Ghanaians to shun the ongoing comparisons between Ghanaian and Nigerian music, urging fans and the media to appreciate and support their own.
Speaking in an interview with veteran comedian, Kwaku Sintim-Misa, also known as KSM, Medikal pointed out that the current dominance of Nigerian music is part of a cycle, adding that there was a time when Ghanaian artistes like VIP and Tic Tac were the top names in West Africa.
He stressed that such comparisons are unproductive and overlook the achievements of Ghanaian artistes, who have been recognised with international awards like the BETs, unlike their counterparts in other African countries.
“I always dislike this comparison because it is like we do not appreciate our country, or our own music. It is just an era. Maybe this is the era where Nigerian music dominates more than Ghanaian music. Consider the Zimbabweans; they make music too. When was the last time you heard of Zimbabwean artistes being nominated for the BETs? They are not complaining. Yet, Ghanaian artistes are winning BET awards, and we are still complaining.
“There was a time when VIP and Tic Tac were the biggest artistes in West Africa, thus, it is simply an era. We should not be overly bitter,” he said.
Medikal called for unity and support within the Ghanaian music industry, suggesting that if local media played more Ghanaian music, there would be less cause for complaints.
“We ought to support ourselves more by playing Ghanaian music. If the media platforms played 100% Ghanaian music, I am not certain we would be complaining. However, they are also playing foreign music.
“I am not suggesting that it is bad for them to play foreign music, but you should not exert pressure on the artiste when you are not helping the artiste as an individual to,” he said.
