Suspect swallows handcuff key to end his life

Tarkwa (W/R) June 24-GNA- A suspect, Yahaya Aidoo who swallowed a handcuff key started vomiting blood and foaming at the mouth and Aboso Police had to rush him to Aboso Clinic.

Having received first aid here, the suspect, was referred to Government Hospital Tarkwa for further treatment.

When Aidoo was been escorted to hospital at Tarkwa, he attempted running away with the handcuff on his hand.

He was given a hot chase amidst firing of warning shots and was re-arrested.

Consequently, Aidoo was put before a Tarkwa Circuit Court charged with stealing and by his actions attempted suicide and escaping from lawful custody.

The Court, presided over by Mr. John Ajet-Nasam, has granted Aidoo a bail in the sum of fifty million cedis with one surety to be justified.

The case has been adjourned to July 6. Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Joseph Apaloo of Tarkwa Police said the complainant in the case Vincent Drai is a security supervisor at Aboso Glass Factory.

He said on June 6 at about 2200 hours, the complainant was on duty when he had information that some people were tempering with the underground electric cable linking the main factory to the low cost bungalows nearby.

As a result, the complainant and the informants kept watching and at about 2300 hours same day, an unusual noise was heard from the area and they rushed there but the suspects, ran away leaving behind their working tools, including one cutlass with the handle covered with a green rope and two shovels.

Upon a tip-off Aidoo was arrested two hours later in his house where one shirt, one pair of trousers and a pair of brown boot all wet and suspected to have been used in committing the crime were found. One Ama Amoser, who is a witness in the case and stays in the same house with the Aidoo paid him a visit at the Police Station. When she saw the cutlass with the handle covered with a green rope with a policeman, she identified it as hers and said it was Aidoo who gave it to her.

Aidoo also admitted being the owner of the cutlass in his caution statement.

Aidoo, who was in handcuff and was about to be sent to cells, quickly took the handcuff key when it felt down and attempted to end his life by swallowing it after which he started vomiting blood and foaming at the mouth.

Accused, pretending to be weak and suffering was rush to Aboso Health Centre for first aid after which he was referred to Government Hospital Tarkwa for further treatment. On the way, Aidoo managed to escape in handcuff but was later arrested.
