On Saturday, June 1, 2024, the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre [AICC] will host the most prestigious event on the Ghanaian music scene calendar, the Telecel Ghana Music Awards [TGMA].

This year’s event, which is the 25th edition, has brought intense reactions from music enthusiasts about who wins what on the night.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the biggest announcement of the night – the ‘Artist of the Year’. This coveted top prize has always sparked passionate debates among fans, and this year’s edition is no exception.

The artistes competing for the award include Stonebwoy, King Promise, Nacee, Black Sherif, Kuami Eugene and Sarkodie.

In this piece, GhanaWeb brings you what celebrities have said about who deserves to win the much-coveted accolade.

1. Halifax Ansah-Addo (Journalist):

"My bet was on Stonebwoy; he's worked, and he deserves it. His team has also found a nice way of pushing him and his work on us. You get to know what he's doing, whether you like it or not.

"Until tonight, I didn't know King Promise had worked. When they gave me King Promise's repertoire, I was shocked, and I started to revise my notes. I would not be surprised if King Promise gets it.

"I think going forward, people like King Promise should be more deliberate about getting the Ghanaian market involved in the things he does. He is doing so, but it is rather late. I'm not sure they can use this last week to catch up. Unlike Stonebwoy, who over the years has been vocal about his activities," he said during the United Showbiz programme.

2. Efia Odo (Actress):

"If King Promise doesn’t win Artiste of the Year then the award show is f*cking rigged. He’s put in too much to work to go unnoticed” she wrote on X.

3. Quick Action (Music producer):

"I am a witness to this journey. I have been watching from afar and I am proud of the musical growth. I am speaking as the first music producer of Stonebwoy. He has worked very well by gaining international recognition, and hard work.

"His collaboration with Angélique Kidjo, organising the annual musical concert is a big deal. No disregard to his competitors! I think Stonebwoy deserves the Artiste of the Year," he noted during an interview on Joy FM.

4. Ken Addy (Broadcaster, pundit):

"I always like to look out for new things. Stonebwoy is an established musician if you ask me. Stone has won before. So I am always looking out for new people to win. And I am saying that as far as I am concerned, I will be very if King Promise wins because he holds so much promise and what he has done in that year is very promising," he said according to myjoyonline.com.

5. Killbeatz (Music producer):

"This is what we've been waiting for! To take Ghanaian music and African music to another level. And I'm so proud of King Promise.

"There is nobody else. He has to win it! If somebody else wins that award, I don't know what they're trying to say," Myjoyonline.com quoted him as having said.

Last year, Black Sherif won Artiste of the Year along with three other awards, while Camidoh secured Afrobeats Song of the Year and Best Collaboration. King Promise took home Album of the Year for "5 Star," Sarkodie was named Hiplife Artiste of the Year, and Piesie Esther won both Gospel Song of the Year and Gospel Artiste of the Year.
