Joshua ‘Virgen’ Boateng
Composer Joshua ‘Virgen’ Boateng (JVB) has challenged the popular notion that copyright should not matter when making Gospel songs.
He argued that “it’s for God’s work” is not a good excuse to illegally use someone’s intellectual property.
To explain his point, the FRA! band drummer cited an example that would resonate with the Christian community.
“You cannot just barge into someone’s church and organize a concert because it is God’s work. The proper thing or approach is to ask for permission or pay for the use of the church space,” Virgen said.
He drew the parallel for copyright clearance.
“If you want to use artiste A’s line or music, the best thing for you to do is to contact the person. If you have to pay, pay. If the person says go ahead, yes, go ahead. If the person says no, just don’t do it,” the record producer beseeched.
He cautioned, in conclusion: “Gospel musicians should take copyright matters seriously.”
Affectionately called JVB in the Gospel music circles, Joshua ‘Virgen’ Boateng has worked with Gospel artistes like Rev Edwin Dadson, Apostle Oheneba Poku, Kweku Teye, Aduhemaa, and Enuonyam, to name a few.
