Sunyani (B/A), March. 15, GNA- Ten students among a total of 88 selected from Junior High Schools in the Brong-Ahafo Region were on Friday honoured for excelling in a spelling competition. Quest Events in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service organized the contest.

The students honoured for excelling in the competition were Nana Fosua Prempeh, Ankamah Abraham, Kyarewaa Baffour, Ofori Felix, Ayiwah Grace, Addo Kusi Patience, Boamah Naomi, Ankamah Serwaa Federa, Frimpong Joseph and Anita Oppong. The first five students, who were from Sunyani and Berekum Municipalities, as well as Jaman North and Nkoranza South districts, are to represent the region against their counterparts from the other regions at the final competition in Accra in August this year. Mr Kwado Morgan, Director of the National Spelling Zee, noted that the standard of the English Language has fallen and the contest was a major intervention to help improve the situation. He urged the student to maintain the habit of reading and asked them to note the spellings of the words they come across, adding that, the programme would be organized regularly to help lift the standard of the English Language among students in the country. The Director expressed his appreciation to the Municipal and District Education Offices of the Ghana Education Service for the support they accorded the event.

Mr Kwabena Adjei Bawuah Agyemang Badu, Nkoranza South District Director of Education, who presided, urged the students to work extra hard to win the upcoming final competition. He lauded the performance of the contestants and advised those who could not make it to the finals to work hard and prepare well for next year's competition.

He promised to provide the necessary support needed by the students in his district "to help lift the area high in education".
