Ghanaian veteran actor, Fred Amugi
Amidst the ongoing legal disputes over the leadership of the Actors Guild of Ghana, veteran Ghanaian actor Fred Amugi has voiced his concerns about the situation, noting its detrimental effects on the progress of the movie industry.
Mr. Amugi has highlighted the detrimental impact of the absence of a functional and effective leadership on the industry's growth.
Since the passing of Reverend Eddie Coffie, the guild's president in 2016, efforts to elect new executives have been stalled, depriving the guild of effective leadership to oversee industry affairs and advocate for actors' welfare.
However, in an interview with Graphic Showbiz on Monday, May 20, 2024, Mr. Fred Amugi voiced his hope for a resolution within the Guild to facilitate its revival.
"The film industry is facing challenges like any other business. However, in recent years, internal power struggles and conflicts, particularly within the Ghana Actors Guild, have hindered productivity and quality control," Amugi lamented.
He acknowledged the positive impact of platforms like Akwaaba Magic on DStv, which have supported Ghanaian films.
He also emphasized the need for continued collaboration to leverage such opportunities and enhance the quality of locally produced films.
Comparing Ghana's film industry to Nigeria's, Amugi highlighted the latter's advantage in accessing subscription-based streaming services like Netflix. He stressed the importance of unity within Ghana's industry to bridge the gap and compete effectively on the global stage.
Fred Amugi urged for a shift towards collaboration and cooperation among industry stakeholders, emphasizing that collective efforts would yield superior results and increase Ghana's presence in prestigious awards such as the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA).
"In unity, we have the potential to create outstanding films that showcase our diverse talents and perspectives," he concluded, underscoring the significance of solidarity in advancing the Ghanaian film industry.
