Three thieves stole spices from market.

Tema, June 30, GNA - Two out of a gang of three thieves who broke into a trader's chop box at Ashaiman market and stole wares including spices and cooking oil have been granted 10 million cedis bail each by the Tema circuit court 'A".

Augusta Nartey, trader and Kwaku Tormenti, truck pusher who pleaded not guilty will reappear on July 19 2004.

Their accomplice, Doun Shoe is now at large.

Inspector Adolphus Otchere told the court presided over by Mr Charles Asiedu that on Thursday, May 20, 2004, after the day's sales, the complainant parked her wares including assorted spices, tin tomatoes, cooking oil valued at 2.2 million cedis into a chop box she kept at the market.

She went to the market the next morning to discover the theft and made a report to the police.

Inspector Otchere said after investigations Nartey, Kwaku Tormenti and Doun Shoe were arrested they admitted the offence in the cautioned statements they gave but Doun Shoe jumped police enquiry bail. He said during the investigations, a witness brought a bag containing spices given to him by Kwaku Tormenti, adding that, when Nartey's wife heard of the case; she returned four boxes of tin tomatoes to the police station.

The court was told that Nartey's mother had also made part payment of 800,000 cedis to police for the items. 30 June 04
