Three women seek to break up marriage

Sunyani, Jan. 22. GNA - The Sunyani Municipal Magistrate court on Wednesday granted three women 10 million cedis bail each for fabricating a rape story against one Nana Kyerewaa at Seikwa in Brong Ahafo. Adwoa Asirifi, trader and Yaa Foster, teacher, pleaded guilty with explanation on a charge of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace, whilst Cynthia Fakyiwaa, unemployed, pleaded guilty to the charge.

Mr Joseph Robert Quanson, Presiding Judge, after listening to the explanations from Yaa and Adwoa granted them the bail to reappear on February 2, this year for sentence.

Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police Alex Yartey Tawiah told the court that the accused and Nana Kyerewaa lived at Seikwa. He said in December last year, the accused conspired to tarnish the image of Nana Kyerewaa and fabricated a story that she had been gang-raped by some men in a drinking bar.

DSP Tawiah said the story went round the town and residents started mocking at her and calling her names including "scent n-o-o-o...scent no...agye baa bia" in Twi meaning the scent has permeated everywhere. DSP Tawiah said residents of Berekum heard about the story when the accused phoned Chris FM, a local radio station at Berekum and reported the story to a presenter who discussed it in a programme.

Nana Kyerewaa's husband, who lives in Italy, heard about the story and ordered his family to dissolve the marriage.

Nana Kyerewaa realizing that, the radio programme was tarnishing her image reported the matter to the police who arrested the accused. The prosecutor said after investigations it was found that the story was fabricated by the accused so Nana's husband would divorce her.
