A THIRTY-FIVE-YEAR old self-styled trader, Abdul Razak Clottey, alias Allotey, who allegedly defrauded a couple at Darkuman in Accra, of $12,000 and ?37 million, under the pretext of converting the moneys into pounds sterling has been arrested by the police.

The suspect also allegedly promised to assist the couple to import goods from Britain.

The suspect, however, told the police that he was sent by the couple, Mr Joseph Gyabaah and his wife, Mavis, who operate a communication centre, to purchase a chemical used for processing dummy dollar notes into genuine ones.

Briefing the Graphic in Greater Accra yesterday, Dr K. K. Manfo, Accra Regional Police Commander, said Clottey, who is a regular customer of the centre, was said to have convinced the couple sometime in March, this year, that he could help them to import goods from Britain.

He said the suspect allegedly told the couple that they must first convert their moneys into pounds sterling to enable them to import the goods from Britain.

Based on that, the couple parted with $12,000 and ?37 million, but Clottey absconded with the money.

According to Dr Manfo, the suspect was spotted last Thursday at Kaneshie by Mavis, who raised an alarm, leading to Clottey’s arrest.

During interrogation, Clottey initially told the police that he collected the money to buy the chemical for the couple.

The suspect later changed the story and said he did not collect any money at all from the couple.
