Breman Asikuma (C/R) June 6, GNA- Twifo Praso Secondary School, in the Central Region, on Tuesday received an awarded for winning an environment quiz competition for second cycle schools in the region. The school was presented with a certificate of merit and a set of books on science, environmental management, climatic change and sanitation, during the celebration of the day at Breman- Asikuma. Apam secondary school came second, while Besease and Eguafo secondary schools placed third and fourth respectively, and were also presented with certificates of merit and books. In all 16 schools participated in the competition, while individuals and organisations where also honoured for helping to improve upon the environment.
The Aboso mine of Anglogold Ashanti Goldfield Mine Limited was awarded for being the first mining company in the country to institute post reclamation bond in the mining sector and was presented with a plaque and a certificate.
Starwin Products Limited, Crocodile Matchets and Unilever Ghana Limited, were also presented with certificates and plaque for helping to improve the environment.
Mr. Albert Obbin, chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Environment, Science and Technology commended the awards winners. He noted that changes in the climate would amplify the existing challenges posed by tropical geographical factors. Mr. Obbin said rising sea levels, advancing desertification and other climate-driven variations could compel millions of people to migrate from unfavourable locations to safer places.
He suggested the building of sea defence structures, development of drought resistance crops and animals and alternative sources of power other then hydro-electricity as a means of adapting to climatic changes. Nana Kwamina Ansah IV, the President of the Central Regional House of Chiefs and Omanhene of Eguafo Traditional Area, who presided expressed concern about the effect of climate change on the African continent and called on all to help protect the environment. The event was organized as part of activities marking the celebration of this year's world environment day.
The celebration, which was among things aimed at creating awareness on sound environmental practices, was under the theme "Rising temperatures-A cause for environmental concern?" Chiefs, district chief executives, members of parliament, school children and a cross section of the public attended the programme.
