An Accra Circuit Court on Monday sentenced two persons to eight years' imprisonment each for conspiring and stealing two goats and a sheep.
Samuel Tettey Quaye, a 32-year-old driver and Roland Gaise, a welder, 32, pleaded guilty. Quaye who was additionally charged with driving without a driving licence, using uninsured vehicle, using vehicle without road worthy certificate and causing unlawful damage was fined one million cedis. Quaye in default would go to jail for additional six months.
Police Inspector Emmanuel Tawiah Boison told the court that on March 12, this year, at about 9:30am, Quaye was driving a Mitsubishi Gallant taxi recklessly on the Kwashieman and Santa Maria intersection in Accra. Prosecution said when Quaye reached the traffic light on the intersection, a policeman at post became suspicious and signalled him to stop but Quaye ignored him and sped off. A Good Samaritan offered his vehicle to the policeman who chased Quaye and Gaise but unfortunately the accused persons ran into a saloon car at Darkuman Official Town.
Prosecution said the two jumped out of the car and took to their heels but they were apprehended and when their vehicle was searched two goats and a sheep, tied with ropes were found in the booth.
Prosecution said investigation showed that the accused had travelled to Koforidua to steal the animals but luck ran out on them when the policeman signalled them to stop. Quaye had no driving licence and there was no insurance cover and road worthy certificate on the car.
