Nkawie (Ash), June 28, GNA - Miss Phylis Ahlijah, winner of the University of Education Winneba (UEW) beauty pageant, on Friday donated a quantity of education materials worth over 13 million cedis to the Atwima District education directorate for distribution to schools in the district.

The items included 30 dual desks, 400 exercise books, 10 boxes of coloured chalk, 28 junior secondary school science textbooks, plastic buckets, wash basins, rubbish levers, rulers and second-hand clothes. Making the presentation at Nkawie, Miss Ahlijah, a second-year management student at the Kumasi Campus of UEW, said it was her aim to use her position to solicit more assistance to improve upon the level of education in the Atwima District.

Miss Ahlijah, who was a teacher at the Kwanfinfi JSS in the Atwima District, said she will soon embark on HIV/AIDS and sex education campaigns in the educational institutions and therefore, called on the youth to abstain from casual sex and study hard to achieve success in life.

She expressed her appreciation to FABI Timbers for donating the dual desks in response to her appeal and hoped other companies would emulate their example.

Mr Sampson Kwaku Boafo, Ashanti Regional Minister who graced the occasion as part of his tour of the district, lauded Miss Ahlijah for using her unique qualities to enhance the socio-economic development of the country.

He reiterated that the government will encourage and support persons endowed with potentials to enable them to contribute meaningfully towards the positive growth of the national economy. Mr Boafo advised Miss Ahlijah to continue to use her potential to solicit more assistance to promote quality education, not only in the Atwima District but the country as a whole.

Mr Charles Yeboah, the District Chief Executive, who received the items on behalf of the education directorate, noted that it was the second time in four months that the beauty queen had donated educational materials to the education sector in the district.

Mr Eddy Obeng-Darko, the District Director of Education, gave the assurance that the items would be judiciously used to enhance quality education in the district.
