University student on 80 million cedis bail for stealing

Tema, Feb. 10, GNA- A student with the University of Cape Coast, Alex Obeng, was on Tuesday granted bail in the sum of 80 million cedis with a surety, for allegedly stealing personal effects, electrical gadgets and cash amounting to over 30 million cedis.

He pleaded not guilty to unlawful entry and stealing and would re-appear on February 24, this year.

The court presided over by Mr Stephen Teye issued a bench warrant for a second accused person Roland Salifu.

Police Chief Inspector, Edith Nutakor told the court that the complainant, Mr John Bisiw, a manager at Sanyo has a son who is a friend to the accused person and they all live in the same flat at community two, in Tema.

She said in August 2002, Mr Bisiw detected that his money and some personal effects were getting missing from his room so he decided to change his door locks.

According to the prosecutor this theft continued until March 2003 when the complainant got informed that it was Obeng who always visited his son who have been stealing the items.

Mr Bisiw then lodged a complaint at the Police station and Obeng was arrested. During interrogation he admitted the offence and said he was keeping the items with Salifu.
