Highlife artiste Kofi Boakye Yiadom, popularly known in showbiz circles as Kofi B, has blamed Charterhouse Ghana Limited for the inability of Ghana’s music industry to grow due to how it goes about nominating artistes for awards.

According to him, the nominations for the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs), which the company organises, are not conducted in a transparent manner.

Asked why in spite of his numerous hits, he had not picked up any awards at Ghana’s flagship music awards event, the Bantama Kwasi Boakye singer, speaking to DJ Premier on Entertainment Capital on Accra100.5FM, Saturday 12th November, said winning awards at the VGMAs was not the focus of his career.

“I am not bothered. My interest is getting the song released so I get to do shows and make money to take care of my children and relatives. What use are the awards to me? They are not sincere. There is no honesty in the awards.

“I see nothing in getting an award. I view the awards like the sneakers I am wearing. What can the awards do for me? Even the lives of those who have won an award have not changed.”

He added: “I don’t see the reason why I should pick a form and fill before I am nominated [for the VGMAs] when no one paid for my work in the studio. I don’t need any award! Even if I am nominated, I will still not go for it.”

Kofi B added that he draws inspiration from artistes such as Amakye Dede, Daddy Lumba, and Kojo Antwi.

Some of his popular songs include Twa Me K?k?, Mmobrowa, Aserewa, Sika Dwa, Belinda, Akua Ataa, among others.
