‘Vagina Monologues’ returns

The Department of Theatre Arts, School of Performing Arts, will from Thursday, March 12 to Saturday, March 14 present a performance of the award-winning play ‘Vagina Monologues’ at the Efua Sutherland Studio, University of Ghana, Legon.

Written by Eve Ensler and directed by Abdul Karim Hakib, the play describes the female experience and serves as an alternative educative platform, the play touches on issues that are normally considered very important but a taboo to talk about.

Although sensual in one form or another, ‘Vagina Monologues’ touches on the existence of the female and uses it as an avenue for empowerment. Indeed, the monologues that make up the play reflect on poignant ideas such as sexuality, cheating, hatred, rape, HIV/AIDS, maternal mortality, among others.

The programme is part of the V-Day 2015 campaign across the world. V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls. It is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalise the spirit of existing anti-violence organisations.

As such, it generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM), and sex slavery.

This year’s play is anticipated to contribute substantially to the campaign to end violence against women in Ghana.

The performance is expected to be full of mystery, humour, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in experiences by women. The play received rave reviews and acclaim in several countries throughout the world with magnetic performances.

These include Zagreb (Croatia), Santa Barbara, Seattle, Oklahoma City, (USA), London (UK), Jerusalem (Israel), Cairo (Egypt), Cape Town (South Africa), Lagos (Nigeria) and the Ghanaian capital, Accra.

Ipas Ghana / Global Arts and Development Centre (GADEC) are sponsoring the performances.
