Valentine’s Day Message To Ghanaians

Tue, 13 Feb 2007 Source: Arthur Kobina Kennedy

Once again, it is Valentine’s Day. As expected, many of us will join the world in exchanging gifts with loved ones and, a re-affirmation of our love to those near and dear to us. For some, it will be a chance to remember loved ones who have departed for eternity or to wonder about love that no longer exists.

For Ghanaians though, this is a special Valentine’s Day, because it comes in the year of our 50th anniversary of nationhood. It is therefore an opportunity to ponder the wider meaning and implications of love. As we show love to our private circle of family and friends, let us remember our national family. It has been said that we love foreigners more than our own sometimes.

On this occasion, let us find a moment to pledge that we will do better about loving those of other ethnic groups, other political parties and other faiths. Let us pledge that we shall do a little more for those in our nation who live in the shadows of life; the young, the sick and the old. Let us pledge that we will do better for families torn apart by divorce, by drugs and by the stresses of poverty.

If we do all these things, we shall be in the true spirit of Valentine and be doing God’s work for him, here on earth. God’s work is truly our own.

Happy Valentine’s Day to you all!
