Wa St. Francis Xavier Minor Seminary is debate champion

Wa, Feb. 22, GNA - Wa St. Francis Xavier Minor Seminary put up a splendid performance to beat Kenyasi OLA Girls Secondary School in the Northern Zone Independence Anniversary School Debate Competition at Wa. Xavier would now meet the winner of the Southern Zone to determine the champion of champions this year.

Before beating OLA Girls in the finals, Xavier beat Navrongo Secondary School by 74 points to 69, while OLA Girls beat Bole Secondary by 72-58 to qualify to the finals of the competition, as the school representing Ashanti Region failed to turn up. In the finals of the competition however, Xavier won by accumulating 77.81 to edge out their opponents who also clocked 77.69 points. Mr George Hikah Benson, Deputy Upper West Regional Minister, who launched the competition said the organization of such competitions would not only expose the students to challenging programmes in future, but would also help them to learn much about other people in other regions.

He said the government was working round the clock to make both teachers and students comfortable in their schools and urged them to put up their best to achieve quality education in the years to come. Mr Cletus Paaga, Regional Director of Education commended the organizers of the programme for holding it in the Upper West Region, as it was a way of promoting the activities of the region.

The competition, which was organized by the Ghana Education Service as part of the Independence anniversary celebration, was on the topic, "That the current subject groupings in relations to entry requirements for tertiary education is a hindrance to human resource development." The Northern sector had competitors from St. Francis Xavier Minor Seminary, representing the Upper West Region, Bole Secondary School from the Northern Region, Navrongo Secondary School from Upper East Region and OLA Girls Secondary school from the Brong-Ahafo Region.
