Watchman, 53, remanded in Police custody for defilement

Accra, June 11, GNA - A 53 year old Watchman was on Friday remanded in police custody for two weeks when he was put before an Accra Circuit for indecently assaulting and defiling a five year old girl at Mataheko, Accra.

Mohammed Kamara pleaded not guilty and he would re-appear before the court on June 30.

Police Chief Inspector E.T Boison told the Court that on June 6, the victim, who lived with her mother Nyaaba Annor at Mataheko in Accra, left home to visit her father, who lived at Korle-Bu where Kamara was a watchman.

The girl went with her senior sister but they did not meet their father in the house and they decided to return home but on the way they met Kamara and asked him for money for transport.

Kamara gave them nine hundred cedis and an orange and later sent the victim's senior sister to buy some biscuit for themselves.

While the senior sister was away, the accused took the victim into his father's room and inserted his finger into the small girl's genitals. Not satisfied with that he inserted his penis into the girl's genitals and defiled her until blood started oozing out.

The accused then warned the little girl not to tell anybody about it. The next day, the girl's mother got to know that the child was bleeding and when she examined her she found out that her genital was also swollen.

The victim narrated her ordeal to the mother and mentioned Kamara as being responsible. The Odokor Police arrested Kamara and handed him over to the Women and Juvenile Unit of the Ghana Police Service. 11 June 04
