Hiplife grandpapa, Reggie Rockstone has said that musicians are not responsible for training people’s children.

His comments came in the wake of Highlife legend, Gyedu Blay Ambulley’s claim that the current crop of songs from Ghanaian musicians does not portray the country’s identity. According to him, this generation of musicians are not learning music as they should.

Reacting to the issue on Radio Univers’ mid-morning show, Brunch2Lunch with Abrantepa, Rockstone noted that the talk about identity in Ghanaian music is a very individualistic issue. According to him, what an artiste portrays in his songs, to a large extent, depends on his orientation.

“I think the worry is our influence. But then again, the world is a global village now. Everyone is rapping and hip-hop traces its root to Africa. So there is nothing wrong with rapping. There will always be that connection. The way the linguist relays the chief’s message is very rhythmic. It’s not different from the ‘call and respond’ in hip-hop. If you are talking about the negative aspect, that is a different issue. Even that, no one is to train your child for you,” he said.

He added: “You create your identity. If it is fresh and flashy enough, then it will have an impact on the people. Good music is good music regardless of whether it is identifiable or not”.
