Media personality and broadcaster Sammy Rasta has called for a revamp of the red carpet segment of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).
According to him, red-carpet events in Ghana, especially the TGMA red carpet, are not respected unlike in other countries. This, he says, has made Ghana the subject of ridicule from other countries.
Speaking to Abrantepa on the E-Forum Show on GhanaWeb TV, Sammy Rasta said that red carpets should be a showcase for fashion and should be run exclusively by experts in the fashion industry in Ghana.
He pointed to the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards (AMVCAs) as an example, where the red carpet, not the awards show itself, became the topic of discussion and trended across the continent.
"I think that if there is a way to remove the name 'Red Carpet' from the red carpet event at the TGMAs, they should. Maybe they should call it a platform for interviews.
"We all have been seeing red carpet events around the world; I don't know why we are not giving premiums to red carpet events in Ghana.
"Red carpets are supposed to be for fashion. They should collaborate with fashion designers to run that show alone. It should be exclusive.
"If they continue like this, people will continue to laugh at us, especially the Nigerians," he said.
Sammy Rasta called on the organisers of the TGMAs to collaborate with seasoned fashion influencers like Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD) to make the red carpet a properly planned, exclusive event.
"Look at the AMVCAs; they trended all over Africa. They didn’t even pay attention to who won what. The red carpet was the main highlight.
"So the organisers of the TGMAs should make the red carpet event more exclusive and partner with experienced fashion influencers like KOD, etc.," he said.
The 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), which unfolded at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre, was a night of celebration and recognition for the talent in the Ghanaian music scene.
The competition was fierce, but Stonebwoy stood out as the evening's top gainer, taking home a total of six awards, including the prestigious Artiste of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Best International Collaboration, and Best Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year awards.
King Promise, another top contender, despite not clinching the Artiste of the Year title, was honoured with three awards, including the Afropop Song of the Year, Afrobeat/Afropop Artiste of the Year, and Most Popular Song of the Year.
