The Ghana UK Based Achievement Awards (GUBA) will be honouring WW2 veterans by making a presentation to Griff Rhys Jones on Thursday, November 14, 2013. The presentation will be held at the Greenwich Foundation for the Old Royal Navy College at 3:00pm.
The presentation follows Griff Rhys Jones’ amazing documentary about his father, a medical doctor, who served in the Gold Coast Regiment of the West African Frontier Force.
The documentary was broadcast on BBC. GUBA has given the award to Griff on behalf of the veterans as they are unable to attend the awards in person. The presentation coincides with the Remembrance Sunday proceedings which honours war veterans.
Griff Rhys Jones said “I am honoured to be given this award, but it is not for me. It really goes to the hundreds of thousands who served in Burma both black and white and to all the people involved in making this film. I just followed my father’s war record and uncovered some incredible stories. A friend wrote to me just the other day that she was “humbled” by the Ghanaian veterans. We all should be.”
Media guests are expected to be at this presentation along with family members and friends of Griff. Special guests include The British High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Peter Jones and Councillor of Greenwich, John Fahy.
GUBA, along with Greenwich Meridian Link and the Business Council for Africa, is currently working to develop a “Down the Line’ programme. Africa and Ghana has had a remarkable impact during WW2 and we often forget the contributions of those who have served.”
