Southern Sector Takes Off
The selection process for the finalists for the Southern Sector in the first ever Model of the Universe contest came off in style in Accra last weekend. The young and potential models were moved in groups to the Miklin Hotel to begin the tension filled procedure to select the top ten finalists for the southern Sector.

After going through registration procedure, it was time for the models to meet "one-on-one with the judges where they were selected or rejected, a process based on international criteria.

After over some two hours of scrutining, the judges were only able to come up with 39 models instead of the first top 50 as planned.

At the end of the next round of selection by the judges, 12 models were selected, going beyond the 10 they needed for the finals.

The 12 lucky models who made it to the finals are; Nafisa Adama, Emefa Asare, Tetra Tetteh, Eyiram Cyrinno, Ruth Mpare and Ayishetu Yahaya. The rest are Maame Efua Acheampong, Anita Mensah, Kafui Akapko, Ama Quartey, Priscila Owusu and Sumaiya Mohammed.

It was quite interesting to see some ladies who were way below the advertised minimum height requirement of 5.8 registering to contest with people who stood at 6"1 and 6"1.5 tall.

Seventy-five percent of judges decision was based on the international criteria given while 25 per cent was based on their own discretion.

The judges were tasked to exhibit individual character to add to the beauty of the show and were also to justify why they reject or accept a candidate.

The models, between the ages of 16 and 27, were allowed to communicate with the judges in either English or any Ghanaian language.

The Model of the Universe Ghana contest, is being organised by 1st Royal Company Limited (Ghana) in association with Miss Tourism World Organisation (England) in search of a unique woman to participate in an international contest. The national finals will be held in June with the International finals coming on in Accra in October.

The event is not a beauty pageant but one to unearth potential models to play their roles in the ever-changing global fashion industry.

The selection process for the finalists for the Northern Sector comes off tomorrow in Kumasi at the Miklin Hotel.
