Ghanaian actress Etty Bedi has opened up about the reasons behind her year-long stint in Nigeria.
Speaking in an interview with ZionFelix, Etty revealed that she moved to Nigeria to work as an actress for a year to gain experience and exposure in a different market.
“I went to work for one year as an actress, don't know what goals people give themselves, but I want to be a very global actress, and I want to start from somewhere. So I just gave myself that. Okay, I'm going to start from Nigeria, then to South Africa, to wherever African country then Hollywood is the goal,” she said.
She explained that there is an abundance of work opportunities in Nigeria as compared to Ghana.
“In Nigeria, there's work. And I feel like when it comes to actors or creative people, we like to work. We like to showcase our creativity. But when it comes to Ghana, the avenues are not there, the opportunities are not there to showcase all of that.
“I'm a crazy person. Like, every waking day, I want to shoot a movie. I want to show people how creative I am and all that. But the opportunities are not here in Ghana. So they go to Nigeria. Because if you're in Nigeria, you won't rest,” she explained.
Talking about her experience, Etty noted the intense work environment in Nigeria, where she even had to fund her own expenses while working.
She pointed out the importance of self-investment and setting personal goals, noting that her determination and faith paid off.
“You have to give yourself a goal. But before you pursue that goal, you need to work. You need to pursue it yourself. Nobody will come and say, ‘Etty, take GH₵50,000, go to Nigeria, go and test the market. Nah, you have to put that money in yourself.
"So when I went, I put my own money. I kept on telling my friends that if I go to Nigeria and it does not work there. If I come to Ghana, I’ll go straight to my mother's village,” she added.
She encouraged other creatives to invest in themselves and pursue their dreams, regardless of the challenges.
