Woman gets punished for biting off opponent's ear

Tarkwa (W/R) Feb. 4 GNA- A 28-year-old unemployed, Akua Sumina who in a fight, bit off the ear of her opponent was on Tuesday fined five million cedis or in default go to prison for four years by a Tarkwa Circuit Court.

Police Inspector Alex Asamoah of Tarkwa Police prosecuting, told the court that on July 7, 2003, the complainant, Joyce Aseduah who is a seamstress staying at Damang near Tarkwa went to a public stand pipe to buy water and after that asked the daughter of the accused to assist her carry the pan full of water she refused.

Inspector Asamoah said the accused who has just returned from church asked her daughter what was happening and the girl explained that the complainant has asked her to help her carry her water and she refused because the pan was too heavy.

The prosecutor said the accused became offended and started insulting the complainant and that resulted in a fight and in the process, the accused bit off the left ear of the complainant, which resulted in a deformity.

The court ruled that four million out of the fine should be given to the complainant as compensation.
