Tepa (Ash), Aug 05, GNA _ Tepa Police have arrested a 40-year old woman, Diana Afua Serwaa, for allegedly inflicting cutlass wounds on her husband, Opanin Owusu Afriyie, 60, a cocoa farmer at Achina near Tepa in the Ahafo-Ano North District.
The victim is responding to treatment at the Tepa District Hospital.
The suspect has been kept at the Tepa police cells since her arrest last Sunday because the courts are not sitting due to the conference of judges and magistrates from Commonwealth countries in Accra. The police said no one is prepared to bail her.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at his bedside, Opanin Afriyie said last Sunday at about 2100 hours he was in bed when his wife entered the bedroom so he shifted to make room for her. He said as soon as the suspect got to the bed, he felt a sharp cut on his right shoulder and when he got up, he saw the suspect holding a machete and about to strike again so he held her hand and collected the cutlass from her.
Opanin Afriyie said the suspect tried to run away but was arrested with the help of people who were attracted to the scene. He said he could not understand why the suspect wanted to kill him because until the incident, they had lived happily together for the past one-and-half-years and had planned to travel to her hometown on August 03 to perform the marriage rites.
When contacted, the police confirmed the story but said the case was under investigation.
When the suspect was contacted for her side of the story, she only mentioned her name, her hometown and age but declined to say anything else.
