Popular marriage counsellor Frank Edem Adofoli has advised couples to take financial planning before and during marriage seriously.

In an interview with Patricia Rockson Hammond on GhanaWeb TV, Adofoli addressed common misconceptions about the prerequisites for starting a marital journey.

Adofoli highlighted that many people believe they need to have significant assets, such as a house or a car, before getting married.

He disputed such notions, stating that couples can begin their journey together even if they live in a rented apartment and use public transportation, as long as they have a solid financial plan in place.

"You just have to have plans in place. That's why financial goals are important. Every couple needs to have short-term and long-term financial goals. One year to five years – what do we want to do? Five years to ten years – what do we want to achieve? Let's have a conversation about it," he advised.

He stressed the importance of discussing finances before marriage to avoid disappointment and ensure both partners are on the same page.

"You have this conversation before we even get into marriage. If you are going on a journey, what do you have? What do I have before going on this journey? How far are we going?" he explained.

Adofoli warned against starting the marital journey without clear financial discussions, as this could lead to unmet expectations and disappointments.

"Don't get into the journey and you are now asking, ‘Oh, what do you have? I don't have this.’ And then you're getting disappointed," he cautioned.
