Yvonne Nelson was labelled a prostitute during the 2015 ‘dumsor’ protest - Vida Adutwumwaa

Entertainment pundit Vida Adutwumwaa has shed light on the backlash faced by actress Yvonne Nelson when she launched a protest against Ghana's erratic power supply, known as 'dumsor,' back in 2015.

According to Vida, Yvonne's decision to lead a demonstration was met with harsh criticism, including being labeled a prostitute by a prominent political commentator, who questioned her motives.

Vida also observed that the current administration under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has created a more supportive environment for Yvonne to organize a similar protest without encountering the same level of scrutiny or criticism.

Speaking on the United Showbiz program aired on UTV and monitored by GhanaWeb, Vida remarked, "When Yvonne wanted to lead a demonstration against dumsor in 2016, some political analysts branded her as a ‘prostitute.’ However, this government has provided her with fertile ground to organize a significant protest without facing questioning or criticism."

Meanwhile, the organizers of the #DumsorMustStop movement have rescheduled their demonstration originally planned for May 25, 2024, at Revolution Square near Jubilee House, to June 8, 2024.

As reported by 3news.com, the event will now commence at the University of Ghana, with participants marching to Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout, where speeches will be delivered from a platform before dispersing.

The revised hours for the vigil are from 2 pm to 10 pm, differing from the initial start time of 8 am.

This adjustment follows legal efforts by the Ghana Police Service to block the protest at Revolution Square, with a court hearing scheduled for May 24, 2024, at 9 am.

In 2015, Alhaji Halidu Haruna, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, verbally attacked actress Yvonne Nelson and other female celebrities for their campaign against Ghana's power crisis under the Mahama-led government.

Haruna referred to these celebrities as "prostitutes and irresponsible" on his Facebook page, sparking widespread outrage from Ghanaians and members of his own party. This backlash compelled Haruna to issue an unqualified apology to the celebrities and anyone else affected by his comments.
