Popular actress of Nigerian and Ghanaian descent Yvonne Okoro has gone to the aid of the people of Wungu in Walewale of the Northern region.
The award-winning screen goddess is providing a borehole for the community following scarcity of water in the vicinity. Locals walk as far as two to three kilometers daily in search of the basic community.
As part of her annual charity exercise, the Ghana Movie Awards Best Actress 2010 said she was touched by the plight of the people of Wungu, especially the situation of the women and children.
“It’s quite a touching story,” Okoro told Starrfmonline.com ahead of the commissioning Friday, April 8, 2016. “The women and children go through stress due to the unavailability of potable water.”
She noted that she finds a lot of “joy in giving to the needy in society” because “the small things that we do go a long way to change a lot in people’s lives.”
“Every year I set aside a percentage of what I earn and use it to thank God for how far he has brought me. We need to appreciate and be content with what we have because the condition of others is worse. I wish I can do more, and I’ll like to take this opportunity to call on others including organisations and the business community to come to the aid of the poor,” Okoro, who has starred in several movies including The Game and the President’s Daughter opined.
She added: “In whichever way you can help the community you should reach out and help. There are times that the smallest amount goes a long way to help society. Imagine all your life without a potable water. This is affecting students. People must see and reach out to people in need. Let’s show love. Touch a life and touch something because it goes a long way and reduces their stress.”
The main event to hand over the borehole to the Wungu community is slated for Friday, April 8, 2015.
Walewale is a small town and the capital of West Mamprusi district in the Northern region of Ghana. Walewale lies on the main road from Bolgatanga to Tamale, at the junction of the road to the village of Nakpanduri.
