Kumasi, May 22, GNA - A photographic exhibition depicting various stages in Africa's political history and their relevance to socio-economic development on the Continent was mounted in Kumasi on Thursday.
The exhibition was mounted by Mr Joshua Boachie Tonto, a fourth year Painting Student of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in collaboration with the College of Art and Social Sciences (CASS).
Pictures mounted at the exhibition included portraits of some former and present Heads of State on the Continent, their achievements, recent conflicts in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Somalia, Sudan, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria. Speaking to Ghana News Agency, Mr Tonto said the exhibition was necessitated by the poor state of affairs on the African Continent due to poor leadership.
"I feel that the time has come for African leaders to resolve to promote the welfare of the people by demonstrating good leadership qualities," he said. Mr Tonto appealed to African leaders to be transparent and accountable to their people and endeavour to ensure the efficient and effective use of state resources to salvage the Continent from diseases, poverty and high rate of unemployment. He was optimistic that political parties in Ghana would be tolerant of divergent views and comport themselves responsibly in their activities ahead of Election 2008 to help sustain peace and tranquillity in the country.
