Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has decried the state of the economy and expressed his frustration about the burden of accessing basic amenities in Nigeria.

The actor, while speaking in an interview on African Independent Television (AIT) about the worsening economic conditions in the country, disclosed the daily amount he spends on basic amenities like electricity and fuel.

The 78-year-old itemised his daily expenses, citing N10,000 for electricity units, N20,000 for diesel to fuel his generator, and N10,000 for petrol to run a smaller generator.

“I spend about ₦10,000 every day buying electricity units. Then I spend ₦20,000 on diesel to power the generator and another ₦10,000 on petrol for a smaller generator. That brings the total to ₦40,000 daily just to provide electricity in my house,” he said.

“It disturbs me a lot because I’m not just working for light. Then I listen to people who are only interested in getting into politics and enjoying power. Nobody seems to be bothered about what’s happening to the common man.”

He further alleged that some public officials deliberately undermine development in the south-east region, pointing to the neglect of infrastructure like rail transport.

“Nobody seems to be bothered about what is happening to the common man. Why must it keep getting worse with each new day? Can we not improve? There was a time when somebody cut off the South-East in terms of railway transportation. Why must there be consistency in going backwards?” he asked.
