The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has indicated that she has engaged the Minister of Interior to ensure those behind the alleged assault on Ibrahim Mahama are identified and brought to justice.

Abla Dzifa Gomashie expressed concern over the alleged assault of Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama, describing the incident as disturbing and unacceptable.

Her response comes after reports that Mahama, founder of the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA) and Red Clay Studio in Tamale, was allegedly attacked on March 21, 206, by individuals believed to be part of the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team, commonly referred to as “Black Maria.”

The alleged incident reportedly resulted in dental injuries for the artist, including the loss of a tooth, while his uncle, who was driving, also sustained injuries.

In a Facebook post on March 22, 2026, Dzifa Gomashie expressed sympathy and solidarity with the artist.

“Dear Mr Ibrahim Mahama, it is with deep concern and regret that I write to you, upon learning of the unfortunate incident involving your reported assault.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, and in my personal capacity, I wish to express my heartfelt sympathy and solidarity with you during this difficult time,” she stated.

She further noted that the alleged assault raises serious concerns about justice and human rights and should be treated with urgency.

“It is therefore deeply troubling to hear of any circumstance that undermines your dignity and personal safety. As a nation that prides itself on upholding justice, human rights, and the rule of law, such incidents must be addressed with the seriousness they deserve,” she said.

Dzifa Gomashie also disclosed that she has engaged the Interior Minister to ensure a full investigation into the matter.

“It is in view of this that I have held discussions with the Hon. Minister for the Interior, who has assured me of his utmost support in unravelling the people behind this cowardly act,” she added.

She reassured the artist of government’s backing, stressing that his safety and contributions to the creative industry remain a priority.

“Please be assured that we stand with you; your safety, well-being, and your priceless contributions to the creative sector remain of utmost importance to Ghana and the world,” she added.
