Filmmaker Socrate Safo has admitted that he, along with some other stakeholders in the movie industry, contributed to the “destruction” of Ghana’s once-thriving film industry.

The veteran filmmaker made this known during a press preview of Nigerian producer Frank Rajah Arase’s movie, held at Silverbird Cinema Accra Mall on March 24, 2026.

According to Socrate, having been part of the decline, he and others in the industry understand exactly what went wrong and what needs to be corrected, saying that if they decide to act, the revival of the industry could take as little as 24 hours.

Music industry headed for same collapse as film – Socrate Safo warns

“I was part of the people who destroyed or contributed to the downfall of the Ghanaian movie industry. I know what we did and I know what we have to undo. And it will take just 24hrs,” he stated.

He further explained that many of their actions at the time were because of ignorance, but said the current state of the industry is being prolonged by a refusal to learn from past mistakes.

“Most of the things we did were out of ignorance, but stupidity is keeping us in today. Even though we have realized the consequences, stupidity is still keeping us from learning,” he added.

Ghana’s movie industry enjoyed huge success in its early years, but now faces several challenges.

Funding remains inconsistent for many filmmakers, piracy continues to deprive creators of revenue, and limited cinema screens and distribution networks restrict the reach of local productions.

Even so, there are signs of hope. Government recognition of the industry’s cultural and economic value is leading to more supportive policies.
