The Ghana Drunkards Association has pushed back against claims that alcohol consumption is a sin, dismissing the narrative as baseless.
The Association argues that drinking is entirely biblical and does not possess the sinful nature often attributed to it by some contemporary preachers.
Moses Dry Bone, President of the Association, pointed out that Jesus Christ whose primary mission was the redemption of sins—performed numerous miracles, the very first of which involved transforming water into wine.
He contended that sermons condemning alcohol are fundamentally unsound and lack genuine scriptural backing.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he emphasized that the focus of religious discourse should shift toward responsible drinking, a cause the Association has consistently championed.
“It is false for anyone to preach that alcohol consumption is evil,” he said.
“The Bible does not speak against alcohol consumption. Instead, it encourages us to be happy, make merry, and enjoy ourselves while consuming alcohol, meat and anything else that excites us.
"It is excessive consumption that the Bible speaks against. Overindulgence destroys the body, and so we have always encouraged our members to drink responsibly.”
He further highlighted the deep-rooted role of alcohol in local heritage, noting that it is an integral part of tradition and culture. From marriage ceremonies and divorce proceedings to funerals, alcohol remains a central element of social life.
He reiterated that, since Jesus Christ performed miracles such as turning water into wine, alcohol remains a key part of human existence.
Looking ahead to the Easter celebrations, he remarked that observing the season without alcohol would be unthinkable for the group, though he underscored the importance of moderation.
He concluded by advising members to avoid excess and maintain responsibility in their drinking habits.
