Black Sherif talks about Aunty Mari
Celebrated Ghanaian music artiste Black Sherif has opened up about Sister Mariam, whom he often refers to in his songs as 'Aunty Mari', and the pivotal role she played in the early days of his journey.
The name Sister Mariam became popular in 2021 after Black Sherif referenced her in his breakthrough track 'First Sermon'.
Speaking in an interview with Kafui Dey, the 'Konongo Zongo' native revealed that Sister Mariam was the one who first brought him to Tema, a trip that forever changed his story.

He emphasised that if she were alive today, she would be beyond proud of his achievements.
“She brought me to Tema for the first time. The first time I saw my cousin’s crib, it changed my life forever. If there’s a word beyond proud, that’s what she would be,” he said.
With visible joy, Black Sherif described Aunt Mari as one of the few people who truly understood him.
“For some reason, I think Sister Mariam was one of the people who saw that I needed space. She was emotionally inclined and really tuned into me,” he shared.
He also reminisced about how Sister Mariam sold waakye in front of their house and always ensured he had food, even when she wasn’t around.
“I wasn’t living with her, but she used to sell waakye in front of our house. I would go there every day, no matter how many times. Even when she wasn’t around, whoever was there knew me, so I would get it,” he recalled.
