‘I once signed an artiste who trolled me online’ - Davido recounts

Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido has opened up about a surprising experience involving one of his former signees, an artiste who had previously criticized him on social media.

Speaking on the '+44 podcast', the award-winning musician revealed that shortly after signing the artiste, fans dug up old tweets on X in which the signee had made criticizing remarks about him.

The discovery sparked backlash, with many fans expressing strong opposition to the signing.

According to Davido, the situation quickly escalated as fans questioned his decision to bring someone with such a history into his camp.

“I once signed an artiste, and I think he had tweeted something crazy about me.

“This is someone I had just signed, his life was in my hands. Then, fans found the tweet and said, ‘No, we’re not going to agree. You’re not with our label again.” he said.

Despite the uproar, Davido said he chose to handle the matter with understanding.

He explained that the artiste had personally reached out to him to apologize before the issue became public.

“I told them, this guy said that when he was like fourteen, he even came to me himself and said he hoped it wouldn’t cause any problems. I told him no, that’s just how social media works.”

Davido added that the artiste eventually deleted the tweet, and the issue did not escalate further.

“I once signed an artist who had trolled me on Twitter for several years. When my fans discovered his old tweets, they made it clear they didn’t want him on the label. But I had to let it go — that was his past, and we all grow every day.”
