I rejected an opportunity to be Alan Kyerematen’s running mate out of fear - Okyeame Kwame

Ghanaian highlife maestro Okyeame Kwame has revealed a surprising political approach he once received from 'Movement for Change' flagbearer, Alan Kyerematen.

In an interview on Okay FM, the hiplife veteran disclosed that Alan Kyerematen's camp once approached him with an offer to become his running mate.

Okyeame Kwame said although he felt deeply honoured and touched by the offer, he ultimately turned it down out of fear and personal conviction.

“I take my hat off for the honourable. No one has said anything that has touched me as much as he did. I didn’t believe that I, Kwame Apau, was worthy of Alan Kyerematen’s running mate. And the beautiful aspect is how I qualified for all ten requirements needed to take that position. When I checked, I indeed was the only person who qualified,” he said.

The “Faithful” hitmaker explained that the criteria for becoming a running mate included holding at least a master’s degree or legal education, being free from controversy, being over 40 years old, married with children, managing an established business, engaging in philanthropy, being likeable, and maintaining a strong social media presence of more than one million followers.

He noted that after carefully reviewing the requirements, he realised he met every single one, something he believed made him uniquely qualified for the role.

However, after consulting with his family and close stakeholders, he decided not to accept the offer.

“I went to think about it with my family. My son was 14, my daughter was 12, my wife is a Jehovah’s Witness, my mother was scared, and I was also personally scared. I also consulted some stakeholders and took their advice. Then I found a polite way to let him know I couldn’t accept his offer,” he explained.

Okyeame Kwame further revealed that it was not the first time he had been approached by political parties with offers, including financial compensation, to endorse them.

Despite these opportunities, he said he has consistently declined, citing his desire to avoid the controversies often associated with politics.
