Ghanaian actress and media personality Nana Ama McBrown has opened up about the struggles she faced at the beginning of her acting career.

Speaking during a discussion on Onua Show Time on April 21, 2026, while recounting some of her struggles, she disclosed that she often had to drive through poor roads and challenging environments to filming locations.

“I remember when I started my career in 2001, I had a car before joining the industry. They would let me drive my car till it gets faulty,” she said.

McBrown explained that despite all the sacrifices she made, the amount she earned was very small compared to the work she put in.

“When I get to the location we’re shooting, we will work diligently and try our best. I charge them GH¢800, but that amount wasn’t equivalent to the work and effort I was putting in,” she stated.

The actress noted that she often spent her own money on transportation and would even drive into difficult areas while filming.

“I was driving, so I knew how to spend money. I would risk and take my car into a bush when filming,” she shared.

She further revealed that after shooting, some producers would even refuse to pay the actors for their work.

“We would finish the scene, and they wouldn’t want to pay me. I later realized I wasn’t the only one who wasn’t paid,” she said.

According to McBrown, she and some of her colleagues would vent their frustration by complaining bitterly about the producers and directors on their way home.

“When I’m giving some of the cast a lift, we would insult the producers till we get to our destination. We used to insult the directors, producers and anyone who would make us uncomfortable on set just to calm ourselves down,” she disclosed.

She, however, noted that things have changed in recent years because social media now gives people the opportunity to promote themselves and gain recognition.

“But in recent times, when you have your phone, and you’re doing something, people would recognize you. When you post things on social media, and it’s good, we would all notice you,” she explained.

McBrown added that she is happy many upcoming musicians are now using social media to push their talent and grow their brands.

“When you open your page, and you only post nonsense, we will also see that one. I’m happy the upcoming musicians are using social media to promote their craft. They’re really trying, and we’re seeing them,” she added.
