Ghanaian rapper Medikal has opened up about his journey in the music industry, stressing that setbacks have fueled his determination to succeed.

Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM on April 22, 2026, the award-winning artiste noted that failure is sometimes necessary for growth and should not break one’s spirit.

“Sometimes, you need to fail to win. That failure shouldn’t break you a human being. It never broke me and I’m still here so there’s a reason why this year we’re campaigning hard for the fans to vote. We have to win something,” he said.

Medikal further addressed claims about his contribution to the growth of other artistes, clarifying what he means when he says he has “put people on.”

According to him, offering free collaborations to emerging artistes is a key way of supporting their careers.

“If you watch the industry, I’ve put son many people on. Some people say that I just do verse for people and I claim I’ve put people on. I take money for verse and I don’t take less than a GH¢100,000 for a verse. It’s not free and I can show receipts,” he explained.

He continued, “If you’re an upcoming artiste and you want a verse from me and I do it for free, it means I’ve put you on. Waddle put me on because he did verses for me and put me on his songs, that’s what it means.”

The rapper also highlighted his achievements as an independent artiste, pointing to the scale of his recent projects and investments in his craft.

He revealed that he invested about GH¢3 million into his concert at the Accra Sports Stadium, which he described as a sold-out event that attracted fans from across Ghana and beyond, including countries such as Nigeria and Togo.

“I’ve done so much for the industry and in the industry. After putting so much work, bringing out so many songs, dropping an album, doing a show single-handedly, independent artiste at the Accra Sports Stadium, putting about GH¢3 million in that concert and it was a sold-out concert, people coming from different parts of the country. Some people came from Nigeria, Togo and other countries just to come and witness my show,” he shared.

Medikal stated that his consistent output, including releasing songs, dropping an album, and organizing large-scale events without the backing of a record label, justifies his confidence in winning the Album of the Year award.

“That’s why I’m loud about winning the AOTY this year like that. it’s not like I’m fighting with someone. The facts and the works are there. I’m not under any label but I’m handling all these things,” he noted.

He added that he believes many Ghanaians would support his bid for the award, given the level of effort and investment he has made in his career.

“I know Ghanaians will be happy if they give the award to me because they know the efforts I put in my work,” he added.
