Nigerian Afrobeats artiste Davido has opened up about his relationship with his father and how it evolved from resistance to full support of his music career.

Speaking in a recent interview on Clue Radio, the award-winning artiste revealed that although his father now supports him financially and emotionally, it was not always the case.

“If I tell you my dad doesn’t give his children money, then I will be lying to you. As he should because I’m his baby,” he said.

Davido disclosed that while he invests heavily in his music career, he primarily funds his projects with his own earnings.

“Over time, you do spend money on music, but you will also make a lot of money from music. It’s even my music money I use for my music promotion, the tours and stuff,” he stated.

He recounted a recent moment when his father showed appreciation for his success after attending one of his shows in Atlanta.

“My dad came to my show the last time in Atlanta and the next day, he called me to say that I did a good job and had an amazing show. He wired me $300,000 and I thanked him so much,” he disclosed.

The singer also shared insights into his upbringing, noting that he lived with his father in Lagos while his siblings stayed abroad.

“I had a studio and a booth in the house and it’s a 17-bedroom house. I’m the last kid of 5 and I was the only child with my dad in the house in Lagos because my siblings lived in America and the UK,” he shared.

However, Davido revealed that his father was initially unaware of his involvement in music and later opposed it strongly when he found out.

According to him, his father even went as far as disrupting events linked to him.

“My dad didn’t know I was doing music for two years. He found out when my second song, ‘Dami Duro’ blew up. He tried to stop me from making music; he would send the police and army to stop my shows. If they saw a flyer that showed I was performing at a show, he would arrest the promoter and the other artistes on the show,” he noted.

Davido stated that things began to change after his music gained widespread recognition, including attracting attention from top figures in the country.

“The song became huge and I was told that the president at the time had it as his ringtone. That’s when I told him that I’ve made it so he should just allow me,” he said.

He added that his father is now fully supportive and actively involved in his career.

“Now, he comes to all my shows and he’s really involved in my career,” he added.
