The final funeral rites for legendary Ghanaian gospel musician, Yaw Sarpong, will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Asuofua Town Park in Kumasi.

According to details released by the family, funeral activities will commence with a wake keeping service on Friday, May 8, 2026, ahead of a lying in state on Saturday morning at the same venue.

A thanksgiving service will also be held on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at Sokoban Ampayoo.

The family has announced a dress code for mourners, with attendees expected to wear red and black for Saturday’s burial service and white and black for Sunday’s Thanksgiving service.

Yaw Sarpong, founder and leader of the renowned Asomafo Band, is celebrated as one of Ghana’s most influential gospel musicians.

For close to five decades, he remained a respected voice in the gospel music industry, touching lives through inspirational songs such as Wo Haw Ne Sen, Awurade Kasa and Tie Obiaa.

His spiritually uplifting music, unique style, and consistency earned him admiration across different generations and Christian denominations.

Through his work with the Asomafo Band, Yaw Sarpong also played a significant role in shaping and promoting gospel music in Ghana.

In recognition of his immense contribution to the music industry, he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
