Kwame Despite, Broda Sammy, McBrown and several others were present at Yaw Sarpong’s burial
Family, friends, loved ones, and sympathisers gathered at Asuofua Town Park in Kumasi on May 9, 2026, for the final funeral rites of the late gospel legend Yaw Sarpong.
The founder and leader of the Asomafo Band is widely celebrated for his immense contribution to Ghana’s gospel music scene.
His passing drew a large crowd of mourners from across the country, including figures from both the business and creative sectors, who arrived at the venue to support the bereaved family and pay their final respects.
Among the notable personalities present were business mogul Osei Kwame Despite, Bishop J.Y. Adu, gospel musician Broda Sammy, actress and media personality Nana Ama McBrown, singers Great Ampong and Nicholas Omane Acheampong, Elder Mireku, Jack Alolome, and the gospel group Daughters of Glorious Jesus, all of whom joined the family in mourning.
A thanksgiving service is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at Sokoban-Ampayoo.
For nearly five decades, Yaw Sarpong remained one of Ghana’s most respected gospel voices, ministering through timeless songs such as Wo Haw Ne Sen, Awurade Kasa, and Tie Obiaa.
His spiritual music and distinctive style earned him admiration across generations and denominations, while his work with the Asomafo Band played a key role in the growth of gospel music in Ghana.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the industry, he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards 2025.
