Nigerian Nollywood star Alex Ekubo is dead

Popular Nigerian actor Alexx Ekubo has reportedly died at the age of 40.

The Nollywood star, known for his roles in numerous blockbuster films, is said to have passed away following complications related to an illness, according to multiple Nigerian media reports published on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

According to a report by Daily Post Nigeria, the actor was rushed to hospital on Monday and died on Tuesday afternoon after spending several hours on life support. He had reportedly been battling kidney cancer.

The sad development was first announced by talent manager and filmmaker Sam Olatunji, who confirmed the actor’s death on Facebook.

Born on April 10, 1986, Ekubo was one of Nollywood’s most recognised actors, known for films such as Weekend Getaway, The Bling Lagosians, and A Sunday Affair.

He was the first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria contest and was named one of the Most Influential People of African Descent under 40 by the United Nations in 2020 for his contributions to entertainment and social development across the continent.

His absence from social media had been a source of concern among fans. His last Instagram post was made on December 30, 2024, prompting months of speculation about his health and wellbeing.

Tributes have since begun pouring in from across the entertainment industry.

Nollywood actor Solomon Akiyesi is dead

Veteran Nollywood actress Funke Akindele took to her Instagram Story to mourn the actor, revealing that she had tried to see him one last time before his passing.

“I really tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace, Alex. Ore mi, as you fondly called me, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together. Rest in peace, Alex,” she wrote.

Fellow actress Kate Henshaw also paid tribute on her social media page.

No official statement had been released by his family at the time of publication.
