Following the passing of the popular Ghanaian actress Beverly Afaglo, US-based filmmaker Leila Jewel Djansi has taken aim at members of the Ghanaian public who mocked her in her darkest moment and now flood social media with condolences.

In a Facebook post on May 25, 2026, Djansi revealed that when Beverly's house burnt down in 2021, she had posted about the tragedy on Facebook seeking support for the actress, only to be met with insults, abuse, and open mockery from Ghanaians who found entertainment in Beverly's pain.

"Some Ghanaians mocked her pain and said the most unkind things. I intentionally refused to take that post down because I wanted to remember what was revealed. What are you posting RIP for now?" she wrote.

Djansi then pointed out what she described as a culture of schadenfreude, the human tendency to derive pleasure from another's misfortune, that she says has come to define too much of Ghana's online behaviour.

"A people who do not want to help you heal. They wait for your collapse so they can feel taller standing beside your ruins. A people who cannot wait to hear you have failed. A people who measure their success by another's failure. A people who cannot wait to pass you by so they can heap scorn on the same fingers that fed them," she wrote.

She further described Afaglo’s death as an opportunity for change among Ghanaians.

"Maybe this is what Beverly is leaving behind, an opportunity to change,” she closed.

Beverly Afaglo passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at the International Maritime Hospital in Tema after a two-year battle with cancer. She was 42.
