The decision for actress Beverly Afaglo to shave her hair for a film role turned out to be the beginning of a painful journey that unfolded alongside her battle with cancer, according to a tribute shared by her manager, Abu Iddrisu.

According to the tribute shared on Facebook, Beverly Afaglo first cut her hair as part of preparations for a film role where she was set to portray a character requiring a bald look.

Her manager recalled a moment around the decision, saying he suggested the change during a discussion about the character, and the actress questioned whether it was not extreme for such a look before agreeing to go ahead.

The manager said Afaglo later revealed to him that she had received confirmation of a cancer diagnosis and would begin treatment.

Even with this news, she chose to proceed with the film, insisting that the production should not be cancelled.

“It was a dawn call — I was buzzing, hadn’t slept, and had just cracked something about the character. She needed to go bald. ‘Eeii Abu, isn’t that too much?’ you asked. No, I said. This is how I see her. You laughed, told me to hold on, said you had something to tell me. So that weekend I came home.

“You had just returned from the hospital with Ben. We sat on the floor together. Your face was different. I was still wearing my excitement. You smiled — but not your smile. Then you said, ‘Abu, you got it. I’m cutting my hair.’ I lit up. Then you said it was partly for the character, but partly because the results had confirmed cancer. You’d cut your hair for the shoot and begin treatment straight after,” Abu Iddrisu recounted.

Her manager wrote that he initially pushed for the project to be stopped, but she refused. Instead, she worked with the team to adjust schedules around her treatment. Scenes were reduced, rest days were added, and plans were reshaped to match her health needs.

The post also describes how she later travelled to the United States for further treatment.

There was initial hope around that decision, but communication became difficult over time as her condition progressed.

Afaglo eventually returned to Ghana to be closer to her children. Her manager noted that this choice came even though it meant stepping away from what may have been a stronger treatment path abroad for the actress.

Abu Iddrisu said as her illness progressed, she began to withdraw from people, including those closest to her.

According to the account, she asked for space at one point, before later reconnecting with her usual warmth and humour, even while still undergoing treatment.

One moment her manager highlighted was a hospital visit where she insisted on seeing him despite her condition.

He described how she was surrounded by medical equipment but still managed to embrace him tightly and reassure him that she was not “going anywhere.”

Her manager concluded the post by looking back on her passing and the impact she left behind.

“Berv, you don’t know what you’ve left inside me. I am going to live fully — for myself, and for you. You haven’t gone. Something else has departed, but you remain. And I will live for both of us,” Abu Iddrisu wrote.
