Ziega says Ghana should recall High Commissioner from South Africa amid tensions
Following alleged xenophobic attacks against Ghanaian nationals in South Africa, entertainment critic Nana Frimpong Ziega has called on Ghana to cut diplomatic ties with the country.
Speaking on United Showbiz on May 30, 2026, Nana Frimpong Ziega said that after Ghanaians living in South Africa are evacuated back home due to growing fears over xenophobic violence, Ghana's High Commissioner should also be recalled.
He argued that one of the core functions of a High Commissioner is to protect and provide support for citizens in the host country. Therefore, if those citizens are no longer in the country, there would be no need to maintain the diplomatic mission.
“After we have evacuated all those in South Africa who are willing to return home, we have to recall our High Commissioner and subsequently cut diplomatic ties with South Africa. One of the core functions of a High Commissioner is to protect and provide security for citizens in the host country.

“Therefore, if all citizens under their protection have been evacuated back home, there would be no further justification for maintaining a High Commissioner in that country,” he argued.
Nana Frimpong Ziega also described the African Union (AU) as a “toothless bulldog,” arguing that despite the Pan-African Parliament, an organ of the AU, being headquartered in South Africa, the continental body has failed to respond effectively to the alleged attacks.
He noted that South Africa hosts key African institutions where issues affecting the continent are discussed and policies debated, yet the AU has been unable to take decisive action over the situation.
Meanwhile, vigilante groups in South Africa have reportedly carried out violent xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in recent weeks, with what critics describe as an inadequate response from law enforcement agencies and other authorities.
The situation has prompted Ghanaian authorities to begin efforts to evacuate citizens who wish to return home.
